Computer Village — Africa's Largest IT and Phone Hub

NeighborhoodPage · Ikeja LGA — Lagos's Administrative Capital and Commercial Hub · Lagos

Overview

Located in the heart of Ikeja under the Otigba flyover, Computer Village is the largest technology products market in sub-Saharan Africa.

From a Residential Street to a Tech Empire

Computer Village began in 1997 as a one-person operation on a residential street called "Otigba" in Ikeja. As early as 1996, the very first transactions there mostly involved memory chips and computer components. Starting from the first three pioneer shops, other traders came to learn the trade before gaining independence and opening their own stalls, in turn training the next wave of newcomers, an organic growth pattern typical of Lagos's informal markets. By 2001, homeowners in the surrounding streets had begun selling or converting their apartments into shopping plazas specializing in computers and mobile phones, completing the district's transformation from residential neighborhood to fully fledged commercial hub. The ICT accessories market had previously been located on Ogunlana Drive in Surulere back in the early 1990s.

A Site Under Pressure

In April 2017, the Lagos State government announced plans to relocate Computer Village to a new ICT park in Katangowa, in the Agbado area, with more than 3,000 traders from Otigba slated to move. That relocation plan reflects the growing land pressure on this now highly valuable site at the heart of Ikeja, even as Computer Village remains the continental reference point for buying and repairing computer and phone equipment.

Sales and Real-Time Repairs

The market today brings together thousands of highly skilled technicians capable of carrying out complex hardware and software repairs on laptops, smartphones, and servers, often within minutes. That hands-on technical expertise, combined with wholesale and retail offerings spanning the full range of tech products, explains why Computer Village continues to draw customers from across Nigeria and the wider region, despite growing competition from online retail.

Activities and Services

  • Hardware Sales: Laptops, the latest smartphones, servers, and high-tech accessories.
  • Repair and Maintenance: Thousands of highly trained technicians perform complex hardware and software repairs on the spot, often while customers wait, from cracked screens to motherboard-level soldering work rarely offered elsewhere in the country.

Administrative context

This neighbourhood is part of the Ikeja LGA, which covers 49.92 km² and had 313,196 inhabitants at the 2006 census (2022 estimate: 470,200). These figures cover the whole LGA, not the neighbourhood alone, and the 2006 census is disputed. See the Ikeja LGA page and Wikipedia.
