Overview
The Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) is a special economic zone covering more than 16,000 hectares within Ibeju-Lekki LGA.
An International Joint Venture Born in 2006
The Lekki Free Trade Zone was established in 2006 through a joint venture bringing together China Africa Lekki Investment Ltd (CALIL), the Lagos State Government, and Lekki Worldwide Investment Ltd. Investment, initially modest, accelerated sharply after 2010 with the arrival of international partners, notably from China, gradually transforming a coastal area once devoted to artisanal fishing into one of the largest industrial development projects on the entire African continent.
The Dangote Refinery at the Heart of the Zone
In 2013, the Dangote Group announced it would build what became the world's largest single-train refinery on a 2,500-hectare site within the free trade zone. Inaugurated on 22 May 2023, the refinery has a processing capacity of roughly 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Right next door, Lekki Deep Sea Port, built by a consortium bringing together private investors, the African Development Bank, the Nigerian federal government, and Lagos State, began full commercial operations in April 2023, with a planned capacity of 2.7 million TEUs a year, making the LFTZ the new industrial and energy center of gravity for all of West Africa.
A 16,000-Hectare Economic Zone
Spanning more than 16,000 hectares within Ibeju-Lekki LGA, the Lekki Free Trade Zone also hosts numerous international enterprise zones specializing in industrial assembly, logistics, and chemicals, alongside the Dangote Fertilizer petrochemical complex. This unprecedented concentration of industrial investment is rapidly transforming a coastal territory once dedicated to artisanal fishing into a world-class economic hub, driven by a scale of ambition and capital that few other West African development projects can currently match.
Strategic Megaprojects
- Dangote Refinery & Fertilizer: The giant petrochemical complex.
- Lekki Deep Sea Port: The country's fastest and deepest seaport.
- International Enterprise Zones: Assembly plants, logistics, and chemical facilities.
Alongside the refinery and the port, the zone is also seeing rapid growth in gated residential estates, hospitality projects, and logistics parks aimed at supporting the tens of thousands of workers the free zone is expected to employ, a striking contrast with the fishing villages that defined this stretch of coastline only two decades ago.
Administrative context
This neighbourhood is part of the Ibeju-Lekki LGA, which covers 455 km² and had 117,481 inhabitants at the 2006 census. These figures cover the whole LGA, not the neighbourhood alone, and the 2006 census is disputed. See the Ibeju-Lekki LGA page and Wikipedia.
