Oshodi-Isolo LGA — Lagos's Major Multimodal Transport Hub
📍 Greater Lagos · Nigeria
Overview
Oshodi-Isolo is the central gateway linking Murtala Muhammed International Airport to the city's major road corridors. Once a byword for congestion, Oshodi is today a national reference point for urban renewal.
From Chaotic Market to Renewal Landmark
For decades, Oshodi was synonymous across Nigeria with extreme congestion and informal trading that spilled onto the railway tracks themselves. Transformation began under Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, who had planned since taking office in 2007 to clear the market to secure the rail corridor and beautify the area; part of the market was demolished with support from the federal government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation. In 2015, under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, traders from Owonifari Market, which had operated on the site for roughly 40 years, were relocated to the new Oshodi Resettlement Market, inaugurated with an investment of one billion naira.
Africa's Largest Bus Terminal
The site freed up by these relocations became home to a redevelopment project estimated at $70 million, consolidating the thirteen city and inter-state bus parks once scattered across Oshodi into three modern multi-storey bus terminals. Now billed as the largest bus terminal in Africa, the Oshodi Transport Interchange embodies Lagos's ability to reinvent its most chaotic spaces into world-class infrastructure, making Oshodi-Isolo a national showcase for urban renewal. That transformation is now spreading to the neighboring districts of Isolo and Okota, where new residential and commercial developments are benefiting directly from the restored traffic flow through the great Oshodi junction. For many Lagosians who remember pre-renewal Oshodi, this new face of the district remains one of the most striking examples of what determined urban redevelopment policy can achieve within a single decade.
