Yaba / Sabo — The Heart of the Tech and University Ecosystem

NeighborhoodPage · Lagos Mainland LGA — Yaba's University and Tech Hub · Lagos

Overview

Yaba is Nigeria's quintessential tech and academic district. Nicknamed "Yabacon Valley," Yaba concentrates startup incubators, venture capital accelerators, and the country's leading universities.

From Colonial Reservation Quarters to Africa's Silicon Valley

Under British colonial rule, government reservation quarters developed around Yaba and Ebute Metta, drawing railway workers, civil servants, and members of the emerging educated elite thanks to their proximity to transport and administrative infrastructure. While Lagos Island remained the colony's commercial heartbeat, Yaba gradually became the residential backbone that supported it. The Iddo Railway Terminus, opened in 1900, already linked Lagos to Ibadan, laying the foundations for a district that would become, a century later, Nigeria's tech epicenter.

From Sabo to the City of Innovation

Today, Sabo Yaba sits at the heart of Lagos Mainland LGA and borders Ebute Metta, Akoka (home to the University of Lagos), and Ojuelegba. Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB), the historic incubator visited by Mark Zuckerberg and numerous other global tech leaders, symbolizes that transformation: on the very streets once home to railway workers and colonial civil servants now sit the headquarters of Paystack, Flutterwave, Andela, and dozens of fintech startups that have made Yaba the continent's reference point for tech innovation, all without ever abandoning its academic and railway heritage.

Universities and Local Commerce

Yaba is also home to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), two institutions that keep infusing the district with youthful, creative energy renewed each year by new cohorts of students. Sabo Market, with its colorful stalls and loud, warm atmosphere, rounds out the picture, a reminder that Yaba, despite its reputation as a globally recognized tech hub, remains a working-class trading neighborhood deeply woven into the daily lives of its residents, where startup founders and market traders share the same crowded streets every morning, each pursuing their own version of the district's restless, entrepreneurial energy, one coding the next fintech app, the other haggling over the morning's produce.

Administrative context

This neighbourhood is part of the Lagos Mainland LGA, which covers 19.62 km² and had 317,720 inhabitants at the 2006 census (2022 estimate: 483,600). These figures cover the whole LGA, not the neighbourhood alone, and the 2006 census is disputed. See the Lagos Mainland LGA page and Wikipedia.
