Pen Cinema — Agege's Historic Junction, Transformed

NeighborhoodPage · Agege LGA — Railway Hub, Commerce, and the Pen Cinema Crossroads · Lagos

Overview

Pen Cinema is the central junction of the Agege Local Government Area, a road convergence point that for decades ranked among the most congested intersections in all of Lagos. Its name, inherited from an old neighborhood cinema that once operated there, remains tied in local memory to this traffic node, which over the decades became an unmissable landmark for navigating northern Lagos.

A Historically Congested Junction

Before recent infrastructure works, the Pen Cinema intersection was a major bottleneck, where traffic converged from Old Abeokuta Road, the railway corridor, and Iju-Ishaga Road. The chronic gridlock there daily affected tens of thousands of commuters, traders, and transporters using this strategic corridor between central Lagos and its northern periphery.

The Flyover That Transformed the District

Launched under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's administration in December 2017, the Agege Pen-Cinema flyover project was completed and commissioned on March 5, 2021, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This 1.4-kilometer dual-carriageway bridge, with two 3.65-meter-wide lanes in each direction plus access ramps, follows the alignment of Agunbiade Street and crosses the intersections of Old Abeokuta Road, the railway corridor, and Iju-Ishaga Road, before linking toward the Abule Egba area. The project also included the rehabilitation of five adjoining roads, part of a broader overhaul of mobility in the district.

Neighborhood Life Today

Since the flyover opened, Pen Cinema has kept its intense commercial character, with stalls, workshops, and small businesses lining the surrounding roads. The junction remains an essential transfer point for minibuses (danfo) and motorcycle taxis connecting Agege to Oshodi and Iyana Ipaja and to the city center, while now offering noticeably smoother traffic flow than before the flyover was built.

A Symbol of Lagos's Road Modernization

Lagos authorities regularly cite the Pen-Cinema project as an emblematic example of successful decongestion, alongside other major works such as the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. Its delivery, after several schedule slips caused by the technical complexity of building in dense urban terrain, was seen by residents as tangible relief after years of daily gridlock. Today, the name "Pen Cinema" continues to refer both to the neighborhood itself and to this infrastructure landmark that has become inseparable from Agege's identity.

Administrative context

This neighbourhood is part of the Agege LGA, which covers 17 km² and had 459,939 inhabitants at the 2006 census (2022 estimate: 683,600). These figures cover the whole LGA, not the neighbourhood alone, and the 2006 census is disputed. See the Agege LGA page and Wikipedia.
