Ikotun — Ancient Yoruba Settlement Turned Commercial Giant

NeighborhoodPage · Alimosho LGA — Lagos's Most Populous District · Lagos

Overview

Ikotun is a locality within the Alimosho Local Government Area, bordered by Egbeda to the north, Ijegun to the south, and the Igando/Iyana-Iba area to the west, while connecting eastward toward Isolo and Ejigbo. According to local tradition, the community was founded more than 500 years ago by Yoruba ancestors who migrated from Ile-Ife, the mythical cradle of the Yoruba people, making it one of the oldest historic settlements in the Alimosho area.

Irepodun Market, One of Alimosho's Largest

The district today is home to Ikotun Market, also known as Irepodun Market, an open-air market particularly known for its price-negotiation selling style. With about 8,400 lock-up shops and more than 10,000 traders selling foodstuff, clothing, appliances, and electronic gadgets, it ranks as one of the largest markets in the entire Alimosho Local Government Area.

A Strategic Road Junction

The Ikotun roundabout is an essential traffic node, with four outlets serving Ijegun via Ijegun Road to the west, Iyana-Ipaja via the Ikotun-Idimu road to the east, Isolo via the Isolo/Ikotun road to the south, and Igando via Igando Road to the north. Along the Ikotun-Egbe axis stands the Synagogue Church of All Nations, founded by Pastor T.B. Joshua, which for years drew worshippers and visitors from across Nigeria and beyond, adding to the area's renown well past Lagos's borders.

Neighborhood Life

With a population of roughly 400,000, Ikotun remains known for its affordability, a factor that continues to draw middle- and working-class families seeking accessible housing near the major roads linking northwestern Lagos to the rest of the metropolis. The district thus combines historic depth, commercial vitality, and a role as a logistics crossroads for the entire Alimosho area.

A Nerve Center for All of Northwestern Lagos

The combination of a regional-scale market and a four-way road junction makes Ikotun an almost unavoidable passage point for anyone traveling between the residential areas of northern Alimosho and the more central districts of Isolo or Oshodi. This functional centrality continues to feed a dense local economy of wholesale trade, small transport businesses, and informal financial services clustered around Irepodun Market and its immediate surroundings.
