Origins and Positioning
Gidi Culture Festival was launched in 2014 by Chinedu "Chin" Okeke and Oriteme Banigo, through their production company Eclipse Live, with the goal of celebrating emerging African urban culture through music, art, food, and the lifestyle of Lagos's youth. Unlike Felabration, rooted in Fela Kuti's historic Afrobeat legacy, Gidi Fest positioned itself from the start as a showcase for the new generation of Afrobeats and Afropop artists, capturing the genre's international rise over the 2010s and 2020s.
Beach Atmosphere and Festival Experience
The festival stands out for its seaside setting, typically held on secured beaches on the Lekki peninsula, offering a festive, relaxed atmosphere quite different from traditional concert halls or heritage venues like the New Afrika Shrine. The program combines music stages, visual art spaces, food stalls, and community activities, in a format designed for a young, digitally connected audience widely shared across social media. This formula has helped Gidi Fest establish itself as a must-attend event for the African diaspora and international visitors seeking a festive music experience in Lagos, alongside other major fixtures on the city's cultural calendar such as Lagos Fashion Week or the Lagos International Trade Fair.
A Response to Urban Youth Demand
Gidi Fest grew out of a simple observation: Lagos's youth lacked affordable, accessible live music events, in a city where cultural offerings often remained confined to narrow circles. By combining emerging local acts with international headliners, the festival quickly drew several thousand attendees per edition, with some editions gathering more than 10,000 people around headliners such as Burna Boy, Diplo, and Nneka. This ability to bring local and international scenes together has made Gidi Fest something of a barometer for Afrobeats' rise on the global stage.
An Ecosystem Beyond Music
Beyond the concerts, the festival features a genuine urban fashion market, visual art exhibits, and a varied food offering, turning each edition into a full lifestyle experience rather than a simple string of concerts. This multidimensional approach, driven by Eclipse Live Production, has helped make Gidi Fest a model echoed by other Afrobeats events held outside Nigeria, including within the North American diaspora.
