Origins and Founder
The Experience was launched on December 1, 2006, by Pastor Paul Adefarasin, founder of the House on the Rock church, with a first edition that already drew around 70,000 people to Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island. Designed as a free night of worship open to everyone, the event quickly became a major annual fixture, traditionally held on the first weekend of December, just before the start of the busy Detty December period. The 2025 edition marked the event's twentieth anniversary under the theme "Jesus United," confirming its place among the largest outdoor Christian gatherings in the world.
Format and International Reach
Every year, The Experience brings together leading Nigerian and international gospel artists for an entire night of worship, preaching, and testimonies, broadcast live on several TV channels and digital platforms to reach an audience far beyond Lagos. Admission remains free, which partly explains the massive turnout at TBS, a historic site in the city that also hosted Nigeria's independence ceremony in 1960. Visitors should expect heavy crowds around the venue from the afternoon onward and should favor public transport or walking for the final stretch, since car traffic is generally heavily restricted around Lagos Island that evening.
A Landmark Anniversary Edition in 2025
On Friday, December 5, 2025, the twentieth-anniversary edition, titled "The Experience 20: Jesus United," drew hundreds of thousands of worshippers on-site, with an additional worldwide audience following via livestream. The lineup brought together leading international gospel artists such as Travis Greene, Israel Houghton, Sinach, Mercy Chinwo, Chandler Moore, Naomi Raine, and Dunsin Oyekan, alongside the Lagos Metropolitan Gospel Choir (LMGC) and newcomers Tolu Odukoya and Gaise Baba. This international bill, blending Nigerian stars with celebrated American and Caribbean artists, illustrates how The Experience has grown into a global fixture of gospel music since its founding.
A Movement That Has Gone Global
Since its first edition in 2006, The Experience has progressively outgrown its local roots to become what its organizers describe as a global worship movement, reaching millions of believers both on-site and through digital broadcasts. This international dimension, combined with free admission and the symbolic weight of the Tafawa Balewa Square venue, explains the event's distinctive place in the religious and cultural calendar of not only Lagos but the whole of Africa.
