Somolu LGA — Nigeria's Historic Printing Capital
📍 Greater Lagos · Nigeria
Overview
Somolu is a dense Local Government Area on the southeastern mainland, bordering Yaba and Bariga. It is known across Nigeria as the nerve center of printing shops and publishing houses.
Autonomy Won in 1976
Somolu's local government was formed on 27 May 1976, carved out of the former Mushin District Council under the initial name Mushin East Local Government Area. Its creation followed a lobbying campaign by traditional rulers and community leaders in the Somolu area, who sought their own administrative autonomy rather than remaining under Mushin. The LGA today is predominantly home to Yoruba communities alongside residents from many other Nigerian ethnic groups.
Nigeria's National Printing Capital
Starting in the 1980s, the printing industry began concentrating heavily in Somolu, earning it the nickname "printing capital" of Nigeria. The area now hosts the country's highest density of printing presses, publishing houses, and related businesses, a sector so developed that it ranks among the most diverse of its kind anywhere in the world at this scale, employing more than 15,000 people in Somolu alone. That industrial specialization, fueled by proximity to Lagos's school and university textbook market, explains why Somolu remains an essential reference point for anyone needing posters, textbooks, or packaging printed anywhere in Nigeria, a craft passed down from workshop to workshop for more than four decades and one that continues to sustain thousands of families in the dense streets of Fadeyi and Pedro, feeding the country's entire demand for school, commercial, and administrative print, from textbooks distributed in public schools to the packaging of major consumer brands.
Identity and Activities
- The Printing Sector: Thousands of screen-printing, offset printing, and graphic design workshops supply the country's needs for posters, books, and packaging.
- Fadeyi & Pedro: Residential and commercial zones running along Ikorodu Road.
University Proximity
Thanks to its proximity to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Somolu is home to many students and professionals working in media and publishing, reinforcing the LGA's identity as a natural extension of Lagos's academic and publishing ecosystem, where classrooms, presses, and bookshops feed into one another within a few city blocks.
