Ifako-Ijaiye LGA — Residential District of the Northwest

📍 Greater Lagos · Nigeria

Overview

Ifako-Ijaiye is a residential Local Government Area created in 1996, sitting at the northwestern edge of Lagos State.

Administrative Creation and Origins

Ifako-Ijaiye was established on 1 October 1996, alongside 183 other Nigerian local governments, by decree of General Sani Abacha, then the military head of state. Carved out of the former Agege local government, it set up its administrative headquarters in Ifako and is home mainly to Egba Yoruba communities. The LGA covers 43 square kilometers and recorded a population of 427,878 in the 2006 census, a figure since far surpassed by the area's continued residential growth.

A Residential Base Between Two States

The name Ifako-Ijaiye combines two distinct historic districts: Ifako, the modern administrative seat, and Ijaiye, whose name recalls the old Yoruba city of the same name, the site of major 19th-century conflicts between neighboring kingdoms in the pre-colonial era. Today the LGA has established itself as a sought-after residential base for families and professionals working in both Lagos and neighboring Ogun State, thanks to moderate rents, well-regarded schools, and a network of local markets that keeps daily life calmer here than in the metropolis's more central LGAs.

Transport and Connectivity

Agbado Ijaiye station serves as the terminus of the Red Line urban rail network, giving residents a direct alternative to the chronic congestion on Agege Motor Road and the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. That rail link, combined with the LGA's proximity to the Ogun State border, explains Ifako-Ijaiye's growing appeal among households working in Ikeja or on Lagos Island but seeking more affordable housing. Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital rounds out the area's essential services, alongside several well-regarded private schools, including Ifako International School.

Neighborhoods and Local Life

  • Ijaiye & Ojokoro: Quiet residential neighborhoods with local markets and well-regarded schools.
  • Agbado Ijaiye: The terminus station of the Red Line urban rail network.

Prized for its affordable cost of living and relative calm, Ifako-Ijaiye offers residents a genuinely peaceful quality of life rarely found so close to the busier core of the metropolis. For families weighing a move away from the congestion of Ikeja or Agege, it remains one of the mainland's most consistently recommended residential alternatives.
