Amuwo-Odofin LGA — Festac Town and the Mile 2 Logistics Hub
📍 Greater Lagos · Nigeria
Overview
Amuwo-Odofin is a strategic Local Government Area bordering the Lagos–Badagry Expressway. Originally developed to host the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC '77), it blends cultural heritage with commercial dynamism, spanning roughly 114 square kilometers across 14 wards that mix urban, semi-urban, and rural communities.
The Legacy of FESTAC '77
The name Festac comes from the acronym for the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, a pan-African event hosted in Lagos in 1977. For the occasion, the state built 5,000 modern housing units spread across seven main avenues, laid out on an efficient grid designed to accommodate up to 45,000 visitors along with the Nigerian staff and officers mobilized for the festival. Nearly fifty years on, that orderly urban plan and its public amenities still make Festac Town one of the most sought-after residential districts for families and professionals in western Lagos.
Satellite Town and the Mile 2 Crossroads
Satellite Town is a residential estate established by the Lagos State government in 1960 to help civil servants become homeowners. Set along the busy Old Ojo Road near Festac Town's first gate, it serves as a key transit point between the Mile 2 axis and the Agboju market district. Amuwo-Odofin borders Ojo LGA to the west and Apapa to the east, making it a natural link between the mainland and Lagos's island districts, while the Lagos–Badagry Expressway connects the area directly to the state's key destinations.
The Mile 2 interchange alone carries an intensity of traffic unmatched anywhere else in western Lagos: it is where inter-state buses from Badagry and neighboring Benin converge, where shared taxis serving Festac and Satellite Town gather, and where the planned route of the future Blue Line rail is set to eventually ease congestion on this vital corridor linking the mainland to Apapa Port and central Lagos.
Economy and Culture
Amuwo-Odofin is home to hotels, leisure complexes, banks, and large retail spaces that make it a popular anchor point for residents and businesses alike, sustained by the steady flow of commerce passing through Mile 2 and Festac Town.
