Getting Around Lagos: BRT, Ride-Hailing, Rail, and Water Transport

Mobility in Lagos is modernizing quickly with the integration of the unified Cowry Card payment system, valid on BRT buses, ferries, and the urban rail network.

Transport Options

  • Lagos Rail Mass Transit (Blue Line & Red Line): Modern, fast urban rail.
  • BRT Bus (LAMATA): Dedicated lanes connecting Ikorodu, Oshodi, Abule Egba, and CMS.
  • Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt, LagRide): Fast, available 24/7 across the metropolis.
  • LAGFERRY: Fast maritime shuttles that bypass road traffic.

Cowry Card Fares and How It Works

The Cowry Card is the unified rechargeable smart card accepted on LAMATA BRT buses, certain LAGFERRY routes, and the Blue Line metro; it can be purchased and topped up at terminals and kiosks located at the main stations. BRT fares generally range from NGN 100 to 500 depending on distance traveled, notably cheaper than ride-hailing for the same routes, making it the preferred option for daily commuting on major corridors like Ikorodu-CMS or Oshodi-Abule Egba.

The Blue Line Metro and Its Expansion

The Blue Line, the first section of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit to enter commercial service (connecting Marina to Mile 2 and on to Okokomaiko), has significantly cut travel time on this historically congested corridor, with some trips dropping from over two hours by car to around 25-35 minutes by train. The Red Line, connecting Agbado to Oyingbo, is progressively completing the network. For newcomers, it's worth knowing that these rail lines still cover a limited geographic area compared to major Western cities: they need to be combined with BRT, ride-hailing, or danfo minibuses to cover trips across Lagos, a city that spans more than 3,300 km².

Rapidly Growing Ridership

Since entering commercial service on September 4, 2023, the Blue Line has seen rapid ridership growth: more than 583,000 passengers carried in its first four months alone, then 2 million cumulative riders by September 2024, before reaching around 3.5 million passengers in 2025 alone, with daily ridership on the corridor reaching about 15,000 commuters. By September 2026, the line had carried more than 9 million passengers across over 70,000 trips since launch, confirming rapid adoption of the metro by residents despite its still-limited geographic coverage. The Red Line, which entered service in October 2024, a little over a year after the Blue Line, continues this expansion of the urban rail network.

Toward Network Expansion

LAMATA has progressively increased Blue Line service, raising daily trips from 90 to 94 and moving the first departure time to 6:00 a.m. starting in June 2026, to better absorb growing peak-hour demand. The Lagos State Government is also working to complete the infrastructure needed to extend the line beyond its current Mile 2-Marina corridor to Okokomaiko, targeting completion by 2027, which should eventually further reduce riders' reliance on BRT and danfo minibuses along that corridor.
