The Fintech and Digital Payments Sector in Nigeria

Investment opportunities in financial inclusion: payment gateways, POS terminals, neobanks, and micro-credit.

Nigeria is Africa's leader in instant electronic financial transactions (NIBSS Instant Payment). POS terminal solutions and mobile wallets continue to grow rapidly.

Dominant Players and Investment Segments

Lagos concentrates most of Nigeria's fintech ecosystem, driven by unicorns such as Flutterwave, OPay, and Interswitch, as well as neobanks like Kuda Bank and Moniepoint, which reached unicorn status in 2024. The POS terminal segment is growing especially fast through neighborhood agent banking, a model that has given millions of unbanked Nigerians access to withdrawal, deposit, and money transfer services outside the traditional banking network. Investors are also targeting B2B payment infrastructure, instant credit solutions (Buy Now Pay Later), and regulatory compliance platforms (RegTech) responding to the Central Bank of Nigeria's growing requirements.

Regulatory Framework and Specific Risks

The sector remains subject to constantly evolving CBN regulation, which has raised minimum capital requirements for fintechs holding a payment switching license (Payment Service Bank, Mobile Money Operator) in recent years, pushing several players toward additional fundraising or mergers. Naira volatility and occasional foreign exchange restrictions pose a risk for foreign investors, who need to structure their holdings with appropriate currency hedging mechanisms. NIBSS (Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System), the public instant interbank settlement infrastructure, remains the technical backbone underpinning nearly all of these private-sector innovations, an architecture that has helped make Nigeria one of Africa's most dynamic mobile payments markets.

Exponentially Growing Transaction Volumes

Transaction volume on the NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) platform reached 11.2 billion transactions, up 120% from 2022, while the total value of electronic payments crossed a record N1.07 quadrillion in 2024. The NIP system now counts 57.7 million unique users, around 52% of Nigeria's adult population, remarkable penetration for a market where financial inclusion remained limited just a decade ago. Moniepoint, which became a unicorn in late 2024 after raising more than $120 million in Series C funding including an investment from Visa, alone processed around N412 trillion (nearly $294 billion) in transactions in 2025, making it one of the country's largest payment infrastructure operators by volume.

Flutterwave Leading the Sector's Valuation

Flutterwave remains Africa's most valuable fintech, having reached a valuation of around $3.25 billion in a Series E round that included an investment from US blockchain company Ripple, as part of its push into stablecoin-related activities. The company has also strengthened its position in financial infrastructure by acquiring Nigerian fintech Mono, a deal valued at up to $40 million. These consolidation moves and high valuations illustrate the growing maturity of Nigeria's fintech ecosystem, which continues to attract international capital despite the country's macroeconomic uncertainties.
