The go-to cultural hub for Nigerian theatre and upscale local cuisine.
Founded by Bolanle Austen-Peters
Terra Kulture was founded in 2003 by Bolanle Austen-Peters, a trained lawyer turned cultural entrepreneur, today regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Nigerian theatre. Her original vision was to create a single venue combining a restaurant, art gallery, bookstore, language school, and performance space, allowing Nigerians and international visitors to discover Yoruba culture and contemporary African art in one unique setting in Victoria Island.
Terra Kulture Arena: Nigeria's First Private Theatre
In 2016, Bolanle Austen-Peters took things a step further, launching construction of the Terra Kulture Arena, the very first theatre in Nigeria purpose-built for that use, opened in March 2017. This facility allowed Terra Kulture to stage large-scale theatrical productions and musicals under professional technical conditions, previously hard to come by in a country where dedicated performance venues remained scarce. The site continues to play a driving role in structuring Nigeria's theatre industry, alongside initiatives such as the Lagos Theatre Festival held at Freedom Park.
A Substantial Artistic Track Record
Since its founding, Terra Kulture has organized more than 300 art exhibitions and around 200 stage productions, while hosting over a hundred public book readings, a volume of activity that makes it one of the most prolific private cultural centers in West Africa. In 2013, Bolanle Austen-Peters also founded her own production company, BAP Productions, which has since staged nine plays performed on three continents, including Saro The Musical, Fela and the Kalakuta Queens, Motherland the Musical, and an adaptation of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman.
Growing International Recognition
The musical Wakaa! made history as the first Nigerian musical production to be staged in London's West End, a milestone that boosted Terra Kulture's and its founder's international visibility. Bolanle Austen-Peters has also been featured three times in Forbes Afrique's list of Africa's most influential women and was described by CNN as the pioneer of Nigerian theatre, a recognition reflecting Terra Kulture's lasting influence on the country's cultural scene.
